
About the Program
The Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities (IASH) of SYSU is a university-level independent academic research institute that is committed to promoting interdisciplinary research, as well as exchanges and cooperation both at home and abroad, with a focus on the fundamental disciplines of humanities and social sciences. Founded on research in humanities and social sciences and focused on the inheritance of academic tradition and broadening minds, IASH explores the fundamentals and frontier fields of the discipline. It aspires to advance interdisciplinary cooperation and the development of the academic communities, unite the academic community of humanities and social sciences at SYSU, deepen exchanges with academic communities at home and abroad, and provide academic support for knowledge accumulation and thought innovation.

The Visiting Scholar Program is the core of IASH. IASH has three types of positions for visiting scholars, which are Advanced Research Fellow, Visiting Scholar, and Visiting Young Scholar. Advanced Research Fellows are comprised of top scholars who are renowned at home and abroad and lead international academic frontiers; Visiting Scholars are senior scholars who are influential in academia and have made great achievements; Visiting Young Scholars are junior scholars who have made achievements and are well received in academia at home and abroad.
In the 2022 fall semester, IASH has four visiting scholars as the start of the Visiting Scholar Program. They are Takeshi Hamashita, renowned Japanese historian, member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Laureate of the World Contributors to Sinology Award; Ge Jianxiong, Senior Professor of Arts at Fudan University and Member of the History Department of the Social Science Committee of the Ministry of Education; Jin Xiping, Professor at the Department of Philosophy, Peking University and Secretary of the Chinese Society of Phenomenology; Deng Yanhua, Professor at the Department of Sociology of Nanjing University and Vice Dean of the Institute of Contemporary China Studies, Nanjing University.
The 2023 Spring Semester Visiting Scholar Program of IASH is expected to invite ten to twelve visiting scholars. The Institute will provide visiting scholars with excellent working and living condition, and abundant academic resources and activities. During the visit, visiting scholars will work closely with the scholars of Humanities and Social Sciences at SYSU to carry out diverse academic activities that span across disciplines with regard to fundamental and forward-looking academic frontier fields and significant academic topics.
With visiting scholars, IASH will organize a wide range of activities, such as the Yat-sen IASH Lecture Series, Yat-sen IASH Forum, Yat-sen IASH Workshop, Yat-sen IASH Honors Program, Yat-sen Kangle Gathering, Reading Group, and Field Work, to share classical studies, frontier explorations and high-level researches with scholars and students, and train top talents in disciplines, to create a vibrant public academic space on campus.
Eligibility:
Scholars from home and abroad can apply for the IASH Visiting Scholar Program. Our requirements for applicants are as follows:
Candidates should be dedicated to academics, the pursuit of innovation, and the exchange of academic ideas through the study of advanced knowledge. They should also recognize the concept of cross-disciplinary development, assist in the training of talents, and advance the cultivation of prominent talents in disciplines and the growth of young scholars at the university with cutting-edge and open academic resources.
Candidates should exhibit enthusiasm in their work, be willing to engage in dialogue and exchange with other visiting scholars and SYSU faculty members and students, and actively participate in various academic activities organized by the Institute to build a vibrant public academic space for humanities and social sciences.

Application Procedure
1. The Institute officially opens the online application for the Visiting Scholar Program for Spring Semester 2023 today. The deadline is November 30, 2022 (CST).
2. Application channel:
Applicants can visit the official website of the Institute (https://iash.sysu.edu.cn), click "Application for the Visiting Scholar Program" in homepage, read the article while downloading the application form for the SYSU Visiting Scholar Program, and fill in the information.
Once you have completed the application form, please send it to: iash@mail.sysu.edu.cn.
3. Applicants will receive an email notification after they have successfully submitted the application as confirmation that the application has been received by the system.
4.The IASH Academic Committee will review the application materials and determine the list of visiting scholars through certain procedures.
5. Applicants will be notified of the result of their application via email.
6. The Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities, SYSU reserves the right to the final interpretation of this document.
